If you're new to California Fitness or fitness in general, it's often difficult to know where to begin. We have put together some fitness basics to help you get started and be a part of the California Fitness community.

What should I wear to the gym?

Wear comfortable, breathable clothing and running shoes. Nothing fancy, just the basics.

How much of a gap between eating and exercising do I need to leave?

Eat about an hour before you arrive at the gym - don't exercise on either an empty or a full stomach.

What should I bring with me to the gym?

Lots of energy and a bottle of water. And a strong padlock to keep your stuff secure.

Is there anything I need to do before I start exercising?

Remember to warm up and stretch your muscles before you get on the machines or do any kind of exercise. If you need any tips on how to do this our staff are always happy to help.

Can I exercise when I am ill?

No - if you feel sick, don’t come to the gym. Despite the old wives’ tales, a good sweat doesn’t cure illness! Plus if you are taking medication for the flu, it’s important not to exercise or subject yourself to high temperatures and heavy sweating, as your blood pressure may be lower than usual so you may feel dizzy or even pass out.

What kind of medical information do I need to disclose to my trainer?

Tell the trainer if you have any injuries, health issues or pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or high / low blood pressure.

Is there anything I should be aware of when using the steam/sauna?

You shouldn't use the steam/sauna on an empty stomach. And please, no skin or hair cream and oil in the steam and sauna rooms.

Any other tips for gym newbies?

If you haven’t done any exercise in a while then take it easy your first few visits. Particularly for the ladies, as women tend to have lower blood pressure and can be prone to dizzy spells when they first start exercising.
